Shuls in surprising places
Everyone recognises that the popularity of Zoom is due to the very unpopular Covid pandemic. Today’s presentation was the result of בידוד “beedood “ (Hebrew for isolation). But why beedood? Because Myer, also known as Mickey, made Aliyah a number of year ago and it was in Netanya that he developed the urge to exploit
his social isolation both for his own personal educational enjoyment and simultaneously for the benefit of the local Shul social club whose members were similarly housebound. In his case being widowed afforded him the freedom to allot many hours over a period of many weeks to develop the germ of several ideas into a series of illustrated talks based on his online researches, the products of which will be viewed in his illustrated talk. He describes his projects as an enjoyable
and rewarding occupational therapy.
In his working life Mickey was a family doctor in Glasgow
The title “Around the World in Eighty Shuls” suggests light-hearted entertainment, but the
reality is very different and If you have any Jewish soul at all you will be moved by some of the images, sometimes with pride, sometimes with pain. Where there are Jews there are synagogues. Equally self-evident but tinged with tragic sadness “Where there were Jews there were synagogues”. The presentation should not be viewed as a travelogue but rather as a historical documentary with all that that implies.
