3,000 Years of Jewish Civilisation in the Arab World -
Why is this ethnic cleansing
ignored?
The British-born daughter of Iraqi - Jewish refugees, Lyn Julius is a journalist, speaker, blogger and founder of Harif, the U.K. association of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa. Her book Uprooted: How 3,000 Years of Jewish Civilisation in the Arab world vanished overnight was published in 2018 (Vallentine Mitchell) and has been
translated into Norwegian, Portuguese and Arabic. A Hebrew translation is in progress.
In 1948, Baghdad was one of the most Jewish cities in the world. Today there are only three Jews in the whole of Iraq. Why has the post-1948 ethnic cleansing of almost a million Jews from the Arab and
Muslim world, the largest population movement of non-Muslims from the Arab Middle East and North Africa, been ignored ? Yet the Jewish refugees - who, with their descendants, make up over half the Jews of Israel - are the key to understanding conflict in the Middle East. The Hamas massacre of 7 October 2023 makes the story of the ethnic cleansing of the MENA Jews more relevant than ever. Lyn
will explain how recent events should be seen in the context of decades of antisemitism in the Muslim world.
