The Thirteenth Child
Mark deMeza
The Jewish Council of Amsterdam – collaborators? The non-Jewish Dutch Population – could they have done more? Gemmeker – last commandant of Westerbork camp – should he have been executed? Are the Netherlands now
‘repenting’
Mark was born in Manchester and now lives in Knutsford. He spent most of his working life as a company director until 3 years ago when he started researching and writing about the Holocaust, based upon the history of his Dutch Jewish ancestors who were murdered in Auschwitz and Sobibor.
The Thirteenth Child is the title of Mark's first book which takes place in Amsterdam. It includes the true story of a brave Protestant who smuggled hundreds of Jewish children out of the city under the Nazis’ noses. On the last day before the Nazis transported the remaining children, he rescued twelve. Despite saving hundreds of lives, he spent the rest of his life tormented by the thirteenth child who missed out and would almost
certainly have been murdered.
